Ending the Cycle

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by unwanted, repetitive thoughts (obsessions) that cause serious emotional distress. It may also involve ritualistic behaviors (compulsions) that can interfere with normal functioning. Obsessions are often thematic in nature, focusing on anxiety around such issues as contamination, perceived dangers, and preventing harm or illness. The accompanying compulsive behaviors (such as repetitive checking or hand-washing, maintaining symmetry, hoarding, avoidance) correspond to the obsessive theme in an attempt to alleviate the anxiety. OCD can also take the form of compulsive rumination on intrusive thoughts, without the compulsive behavior. Common themes of intrusive thoughts include religious piety, unwanted violent or sexual images and fantasies, and existential concerns. These overwhelming preoccupations can prevent you from engaging in normal activities, creating great distress in both your personal and professional life. One of the most painful parts of OCD is the deep shame many people feel about their illness, leading to social isolation, hopelessness, and alienation from the world around them.

Obsessive symptoms include:

  • Fear of being contaminated by germs and dirt
  • Overwhelming urges to create symmetry and order and feelings of dread if things are not aligned
  • Superstitious thinking, such as believing an object brings luck
  • Fear of having lost or forgotten something
  • Intrusive sexual, violent, or vulgar thoughts
  • Fear of harming yourself or others

Compulsive symptoms and behaviors commonly include:

  • Excessive hand-washing
  • Counting in specific patterns
  • Repeatedly double-checking that doors are locked and appliances are turned off
  • Arranging things in a specific order
  • Tapping, counting, or saying repetitive words or phrases
  • Refusing to discard unnecessary items
