Breaking the Cycle

Withdrawing from physical pain is one of our most natural human instincts, and seeking escape from emotional turmoil is no different. The very normal desire to be free from distress can lead to self-medicating with drugs and/or alcohol to flee from suffering. People with pre-existing mental health disorders are at heightened risk of substance abuse, and the substance abuse itself can exacerbate the co-occurring disorder, leading to a cycle of damaging behaviors that need special interventions. Substance abuse can mask, mimic, and augment mental health disorder symptoms, sometimes creating diagnostic confusion and requiring care by clinicians trained specifically in co-occurring disorders. It is imperative that both the substance abuse and the co-occurring mental health disorder are treated together, to avoid relapse and restore health.

Symptoms of substance abuse include:

  • Habitual use of the substance, even if use results in negative consequences
  • Planning your life around opportunities for use
  • Needing increased amounts of the substance to achieve the same effect
  • Recklessly spending money to obtain the substance
  • Use interfering with family, work, or school obligations
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when you don’t use the substance
  • Changes in behavior and mood

Removed from the everyday habits, stressors, and social situations that contribute to substance abuse, Bridges to Recovery offers a closely monitored healing space free from drugs and alcohol. We understand the special challenges presented by co-occurring substance abuse, and offer an innovative range of therapeutic modalities to help you recover. You may also choose to attend outside 12-step peer support groups in the community several evenings a week to support your recovery process. Through compassionate, comprehensive treatment, healing is possible and a healthier, more fulfilling life is within reach.
